Preserving & Protecting Our Sacred Sovereignty

"To Protect and Preserve Our Sacred Sovereignty"

Upon the destruction of the evil monsters by Naayéé’ Neizghání and Tó Bájíshchíní (Warrior Twins), our Mother, Yoołgai Asdzáán migrated to the west to a place called Yoołgai Bee Táłkáá’ Kin Dahnaa’eeł (Whiteshell Island). After some time, the People went to visit her. They stayed there for four plantings.

At the end of the fourth planting period, the People began to make preparations to come back to the four Sacred Mountains. Before they departed, Yoołgai Asdzáán created the four clans: Kinyaa’áanii, Tó Áhaní, Tó Dích’íi’nii, Hashtł‘ishnii. With the creation, she also bestowed the beehaz’áanii (law) which would serve as our Customary Law, Bik’ehgo Oochííł dóó Anoosééł. Yoołgai Asdzáán established our Road of Life, Sa’ąh Naagháí Bik’eh Hózhóón atiin and mandated the Customary Law to guide and regulate our lives as we go on this Sa'ąh Naagháí Bik’eh Hózhóón atiin: Birth, Puberty, Marriage, Old Age.

Yoołgai Asdzáán and the Diyin Dine’é, (Holy People) sanctioned this law to be our Sacred Sovereignty today, as Ni’hookáá’ Diné. This law heals our sick and resolves our problems, gives us the procedures to help one another through K’é and this law is the structure of how we govern ourselves. Most importantly, this law defines who we are, where we came from, why we are here and shines the holy light upon the road taking each and every one of us towards Old Age (Są́).

It is the responsibility of each member of the Navajo Nation to ensure that we Protect and Preserve this beautiful life that we were blessed with.
